Myer to drop TVs for fashion

THE department store operator Myer is expected to stop selling televisions in the coming months as part of its strategy to focus more on fashion, footwear and cosmetics.
Already the group has said it will cease selling whitegoods and gaming consoles, with televisions likely to be the next to go.
Analysts said the change is a sign of how tough the retail environment has become for department stores. Scott Courtney, of Morningstar Equities, said the more it stops selling certain items, the less attractive a destination it would be for shoppers.

''Ultimately department stores are underperforming and that could lead to reduced pedestrian traffic throughout the rest of a mall,'' he said.
''Department stores are the anchors to a mall, but unlike the past where they offered everything under one roof, nowadays they are the last place a shopper would go for a couch, bed, TV or fridge. Therefore, they must offer a wide range of fashion and other non-household items in order to make up for the loss of sales to a specialty store.''
But, he said, department stores now faced tough competition from specialty stores as well, with customers looking at boutique fashion outlets selling a different range from the department chain's own labels.
To make up margins, department stores have become landlords, as they rent vast amounts of space in the stores to leading fashion and cosmetic brands.
While concessions are nothing new, department chains are expanding the amount of space dedicated to these exterior brands.
As part of the reallocation of its categories, Myer is undertaking a
''re-laying'' of its Sydney City store that will see more fashion items spread across floors that once carried household items.
A spokeswoman confirmed that the retailer would focus on different ranges, such as kitchen appliances - to cater for the current interest in food shows - and less on general electronics.
''We are undertaking a considered windback of TV gaming, music and small electronics, and will focus on fashion and small kitchen items,'' she said.

Kim Kardashian dazzles in white at Monaco fashion show... and accessorises with her new fiancé and $2 million ring

Kim Kardashian and her new fiancé Kris Humphries have made their first public appearance since announcing their surprise engagement this week.

And while her tall basketballer beau was certainly a handsome accessory for the reality star at a fashion show in Monte Carlo today, all eyes were certainly on her brand new ring.

Kim let the stunning $2 million diamond really stand out by choosing a simple white gown for the event.

Engaged: Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries make their first public appearance since announcing their engagement at the Amber fashion show in Monaco

Kris, 26, towered over his diminutive fiancée in a sharp grey suit, blue shirt and sunglasses.

Kim tweeted from the event: 'Backstage at the Matthew Williamson fashion show! He is amaze! Prince Albert & Charlene here too! About 2 go on stage! I always get nervous.'

The New Jersey Nets star gallantly accompanied Kim to the fashion show, but she told fans that she would also be taking in some sport while in town.

Sparkler: Kim dazzled in her sleek white gown, but it was hard to miss the $2 million diamond ring on her finger
'Anyone into car racing?' she tweeted today. 'Gonna watch the F1 grand prix races while we are here in Monaco! Should be fun!'

Kim and Kris flew out of LA just a day after announcing the news of their engagement, and the 30-year-old gave glimpse of the ring as she scooted through security at LAX.

But the reality star and model proudly flashed the enormous diamond in all its glory at the fashion show at the Meridien Beach Plaza.

The ring is thought to include two Bible passage inscriptions, both meaningful to Kim and Kris, TMZ claim.

More details of the romantic proposal are emerging following the couple's interview with People magazine.

'I didn't expect this at all,' she told the magazine. 'I was in such shock. I never thought it would happen at home, and I never thought now.'

Holt Renfrew showcases homegrown brands at LG Fashion Week

For whatever reason, the Fashion Design Council of Canada insists on declaring a theme for LG Fashion Week. There was much head scratching over last season’s “The Style of Power.” This season’s "The Business of Fashion" just so happens to share the same name as a widely popular fashion blog founded by Imran Amed, a Canadian who now lives in London.

Holt Renfrew opted to address the theme prior to its show last night with a campy video (directed by Justin Wu) showing designers, models, store employees and apparel manufacturers lip-synching, shimmying and shaking to BTO’s Taking Care of Business. (Imagine a slicker version of one of those filmed American Idol segments and you get the picture.) It made for a decidedly feel-good kickoff to a week that celebrates our apparel industry as much as individual creativity.

This is the second time that Canada’s luxury retailer has staged a show at LG Fashion Week. The point, it seems, is to feature homegrown brands available in store. The list currently totals 11: Todd Lynn, Ezra Constantine, Greta Constantine, Denis Gagnon, Pink Tartan, Wings + Horns, Smythe, Lida Baday, Canada Goose, Twenty Cluny and Jeremy Laing. It’s a smart approach, mostly because each label presents five or six looks – just enough to get a sense of the collection but not too much in cases where there is also a completely separate show (look for a review of Pink Tartan tomorrow).

Style-wise, there are contrasts aplenty. London-based Todd Lynn excels at a certain cerebral edginess (zippers that twist around the body, a deft hand with draping) that shares little in common with Canada Goose pink bomber jackets. The cheeky prep sensibility that Smythe designers Andrea Lenczner and Christie Smythe continue to explore (a Fair Isle duffle coat, plaid riding blazer) would seem to attract a different customer than the slinky dresses featuring sequins sewn into faux fur conceived by Twenty Cluny designer Sarah Rabin. Jeremy Laing's geometric approach to cut – an interplay between cling and cocoon – is a world apart from the more classically draped, tucked and belted dresses conceived by Lida Baday. There is little obvious overlap between hypermasculine Wings + Horns and all the draped tops and dropped crotch trousers from Ezra Constantine.

Yet, a common thread exists. Canadian designers understand winter, and if they aren’t addressing its bite with layers of long underwear, they’re conceptualizing shapes that envelop and protect. “You actually see a Canadian spirit,” said Barbara Atkin, Holt Renfrew’s vice-president of fashion direction, after the show. “We spend a lot of times outdoors and we need to look chic outdoors.” Up here, that equals good business.

One last lingering thought: Laing’s moonscape print with its repetition of bleak craters was truly out of this world.

Vanessa wants to launch her fashion line

Actress Vanessa Hudgens says she wants to launch her own fashion line.

"When I find the time and the right partner to do a fashion line, I'm definitely going to," contactmusic quoted her as saying.

"I would probably have different seasons dedicated to different styles. I'm one who really mixes it up in my normal life - from the cowgirl to the bohemian to the Indian princess to the rocker to God knows where."

The 22-year-old actress believes her diverse ethnic background makes it easier for her to be experimental with her look.

"I love fashion. I do work at it but now more than ever I get to play with my looks, especially because I'm so many different ethnicities and I can pass as so many different things," she said.

Fashion Weeks сolliding in Moscow

This spring in Moscow is becoming a hard time for fashionistas. Two competing fashion weeks – Volvo Fashion Week in Moscow and Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Russia – are taking place simultaneously, and both offer quite a lot to see.
The main fashion event in the country kicked off on Thursday in the capital. Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Russia is welcoming around 90 domestic and foreign designers to display their latest collections and set trends for the next Autumn-Winter season.

Volvo Fashion Week is already in full swing, having displayed the collections from Russian celebrity designer Valentin Yudashkin, classy and avant-garde Alena Akhmadullina and the collection of fur from Russian actress Renata Litvinova over the past two days, with more to come.

And the first day of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Russia saw a total of four shows. The main to be mentioned was the catwalk show from Russia's most acclaimed and classy couturier, Slava Zaitsev. His signature luxurious looks, rich hats, furs and embroidery have been the trademark of the Week's opening days for the last several years.

Among the brightest names to be represented at this Week are Tatiana Parfionova, Viva Vox, Poustovit, Dasha Gauser, Ludmila Norsoyan, Borodulin’s, and many more. Mercedes Benz Fashion Week will also display collections from the Italian brand Iceberg, which is very popular with Russians. And the show from young Briton Marios Schwab, who dresses such style icons as Kate Moss and Chloe Sevigny, will become the crowning event of the fashion marathon.

This year Russian Fashion Week changed its name, having signed a contract with the German car brand Mercedes Benz. Now it stands alongside the most prestigious fashion weeks in the world, including Mercedes Benz Fashion Week New York, Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Berlin, and Fashion Week in Paris, Milan and London, where the car brand is also a partner.

When chocolate meets high fashion

If Jacqueline Jacek's confections had legs, they could walk a fashion runway.

But they'd have to walk very, very fast not to melt under the hot stage lights.

Her Thai Goddess, for example, is a lemon grass and coconut beauty infused in silky white chocolate.

Her Twisted Mayan? A multistriped spicy chili ganache adorned with anise and vanilla.

Jacek calls herself a "cocoanista," a word she coined that fuses fashionista and chocolatier to describe someone who applies the principles of fashion to the creation of artisan chocolate.

"I decided to make my own dream job and I love fashion and food, so I combined them," she explains.

She thinks she's the only cocoanista in the world.

"Nobody else, as far as I know, has married fashion and chocolate like I have," says Jacek, 29.

All of her chocolate creations are non-traditional and, like fashion designs, are offered in limited six-piece collections that she launches seasonally, four times a year.

The latest offering, Escape 2011, features six flavours from around the world: the Goddess, the Mayan, the Kiwi Kissed Cocktail, the Citron et Poire à Paris, the Tiramisu Truffle and the Home Sweet Home -a decadent caramel made with pure Canadian maple syrup.

And they're available only until the end of May.

Jacek has had six collections since launching Jacek Chocolate Couture, with her husband in December 2009.

She learned to make chocolate by taking a six-month online course for professional chocolatiers while living in New Zealand, before returning to Edmonton.

Jacek uses only the highest-quality, fresh ingredients which she infuses into French chocolate she buys from a distributor. No chocolate-covered centres -too traditional.

She makes every chocolate by hand in a custom-made chocolate studio in the couple's basement that Alberta Health approved for commercial food production.

"We can produce 1,500 chocolates a week, working 10 hours a day, 50 hours a week," Jacek says.

As sole cocoanista, she's limited in the number of retail outlets she can work with for now.

The plan is to expand the company and hire help, but it will have to wait until after the expansion of her family. Her first baby is due in July.

One thing that won't change is the uniqueness of her collections.

"I don't see myself ever running out of new flavours," Jacek says.

"I get inspiration from everywhere. I'm constantly thinking about it, when I'm at a restaurant or eating different things."

A watermelon-rind-scented candle burning recently while she was painting inspired her to research the possibility of creating a watermelonrind-infused chocolate for a future collection.

Not all of her inspirations are winners.

"I tried lemon thyme, and for some reason, I couldn't extract enough thyme flavour, so I scrapped it and went to the drawing board," literally.

Like a fashion designer, Jacek draws her creations in pencil and colour, trying various combinations of colour, flavour and design.

The look of a chocolate is as important as the flavour because "we also eat with our eyes, in my opinion," she says.

"My intention is to always have new pieces in each collection, although I might do a best-of collection one day."

Jacek is taking part in her first Western Canada Fashion Week this year, as a vendor and by donating chocolates for guests and sponsors.

Although her designs haven't made it to the catwalk, "I definitely want to and I have lots of ideas around that," Jacek says.

"I would love to work with a fashion designer and match my collection to their collection, throwing in the extra element of taste or flavour," she explains.

"For example, if they designed a skirt, what would that skirt look like and taste like in a chocolate?" Melting is not an option.
